Review: Southern Sun Hyde Park

Southern Sun Hyde Park, located in Johannesburg, South Africa was one of the hotels that we stayed at on our previous visit to Johannesburg. With its convenient location and efficient service it was nothing short of brilliant. From check in to check out the staff were highly efficient. As we entered the lobby area we were greeted with the smile of the porter who was ready to take our bags to our room. Upon entering our room, we immediately noticed how spacious and neat it was. We stayed in the standard size room and found it more than adequate for my family of 5. I travelled with a 3 month old baby and requested a cot on our arrival. It was brought to my room within minutes. Together with the cot they sent extra bedding and baby bath soaps at no additional cost. Whenever I ran out of amenities, be it towels or milk, throughout our stay, upon request it was brought up to our room in under 5 minutes.

The facilities of the hotel included an outdoor pool, gym and a computer room. The gym was well equipped with an array of high quality gyming equipment and a bar fridge that was packed with bottled water.

All rooms come standard with breakfast. On the buffet they had a wide variety of food options ranging from cereals, juices, fruits, yoghurts, nuts, seeds, cheeses, croissants and sweet treats. You could request to have tea, coffee and an egg made for you. I had an omelette every morning, which was amazing. The restaurant does serve bacon on their premises. However, upon enquiry I was told that all the eggs are made in a separate pan and you can choose your own toppings to put on thereafter. Hence, the bacon and egg are not made in the same frying pan. Having an option as a muslim traveller to eat the eggs was really great.

Within a 10 minute drive from the hotel we could go to Sandton, Rosebank or the Johannesburg Zoo. Another great feature was that the hotel was built adjacent to the Hyde Park Corner mall. We needed to walk about 100m from the hotel through the parking lot and we were in the mall. We loved taking walks from our hotel to the mall.

After our fun filled day out, we came back to a clean room and an extremely comfortable bed to sleep on. The reception also had a nice variety of DVDs including kiddies movies that we could borrow at no additional charge. The Southern Sun Hyde Park had friendly and efficient service, coupled with great facilities and a convenient location making it an amazing hotel to stay at whether traveling on business, solo, or on a holiday with your family.
